According to legend, at the beginning there was a battle in Heaven, between the angels led by the mightiest and brightest angel, Lucifer, and the angels who remained loyal to Yahweh. These stories are originally told in the Book of Daniel, and can also be found mentioned in the Book of Revelation and the Dead Sea Scrolls. For a summary of these discussions, see the Wiki article on the subject of the War In Heaven.
Lucifer and his angels were defeated and cast down to earth or condemned to burn forever in Hell.
"The Fall of the Rebel Angels", right hand panel of "the Haywain Triptych", by Hieronymous Bosch, circa 1510.
These angels are now said to be described as demons, dark spirits, devils, negative entities. They roam the earth or reside in Hell, and may be able to travel from one to the other at will.
This concept has inspired artists around the world and throughout history. Today there is a large subgenre of art on the theme of the Fallen Angels. In modern Fallen Angel themed art, the large majority of the Fallen are depicted as female, which is not surprising that artists have found a graceful female form tells the story in a very powerful and artistic manner. There are some works with male forms that we wish to feature, but are awaiting permissions.
We include here some selected featured works, and also some links to more on this subject.
