"Sweet Prey"
By Karla (AKA sil-enigma), featured with permission.
As part of our presentation of vampires and the mythology surrounding them, we are featuring this piece which includes an image and a short story, which is but one part of a three part story. We feel this is an excellent original example of modern vampire lore, and it includes narrative from the vampire's perspective on the conflict between using humans as prey and experiencing emotions from what is left of their own humanity. Please sit back, and enjoy! For more of Karla's wonderful and original work, and for the remaining parts of this story, please visit her at sil-enigma at DeviantArt!
"Sweet Prey" by Karla (sil-enigma).
~...He had been following her in the shadows for some time. It was obvious she was lost. His first thought was that tonight he would feed the hunger gnawing at him. He hadn't fed for two days ... it was time. All the time he had followed her, he had noticed she was no ordinary woman but an extraordinary beauty. And even though she was obviously in her own world as she was walking through the park, she moved with grace and so lightly on her feet as if she were dancing. She was starting to intrigue him immensely, yet his hunger reminded him why he was here and he increased his pace as he came out of the shadows.
The rain had increased and he realised that she had become aware of him. She had stopped under the lamp. He presumed, she would ask directions. As he was drawing near to her his first instincts were to restrain her, taking from her immediately what he needed... that of fresh blood. But as soon as he saw her beautiful face, her eyes those of a scared little dove, another feeling came over him that was.....to protect her. Her beauty had caught his breath sharply in his throat and her sheer expression of fear had made him forget his hunger.
"My dear lady, please do not fear me. Can I be of assistance to you ?"
"I.....I seem to be lost Sir. I would be most grateful of you could give me directions to the gates." she said.
"It would be my pleasure, fair Lady, do walk with me." he said.
They had been walking in silence for a few minutes and still nothing was familiar in her surroundings but thankfully now, as quickly as it had started to rain earlier, it had now stopped. She said nothing but her heart was racing inside her chest at the closeness of this tall handsome dark stranger. As much as she wanted to be out of this place and back in the warmth of her little apartment, her thoughts were wandering and she found herself becoming very intrigued by this stranger and secretly wishing they wouldn't find the gates soon.
His thoughts too were strange to him as he walked beside her, every so often the wind would swirl around them and he would smell her sweet perfume. She smelt of soft lavender, it was mesmerising him. But he was suddenly brought out of these thoughts with the gnawing hunger to feed again. And so he would, but, at that moment he had also decided that he would only take from her enough to sustain him for a few hours. For he could not and would not take her life. This beauty didn't deserve to die. He wanted more from her, he had decided there and then that he would in time have her selfishly for himself. He would let her experience La Petite Mort and soon she would be begging him for more. And it was just as they had passed over the little bridge near the gates to her home, that he had grabbed her hand pulling her into the shadows of the old tree.
She had started to struggle but he was swift and before she could let out a scream, he had sunk his teeth into her sweet neck...~
